The Modern Hot Air Balloon
The modern hot air balloon is not as old as most people think. The concept of using a propane burner was concieved in 1963 by Ed Yost as part of a project to develop a portable observation plaform for the US Office of Naval Research.

Yost's report 'One Man Hot Air Balloon Development' led to the devlopment of the first practical hot air balloons. Prior to Yost's work almost all ballooning conducted worldwide was gas ballooning, except of course for the notable exception of the Montgolfier flights in 1793/1784.
